San Francisco, US · Full-time · $123,000 – $210,000

About this role

SPAN is a mission-driven company designing, building, and deploying products that electrify the built environment, reduce carbon emissions, and slow the effects of climate change. As a Device Software Engineer on the Embedded Applications team, you will own the full lifecycle of new strategic products, features, and integrations that help unlock market segments and increase sales.

Your day-to-day work spans the entire hardware stack, from bootloaders on systems without an OS up through applications in C and C++ inside an RTOS, to system services and applications written in Rust and Python in embedded Linux. You will be the engineering owner for new strategic initiatives that impact any of our hardware components, from microcontrollers through the application stack in embedded Linux.

You will work directly with a broad cross-functional strategic team including product, mobile software, cloud software, and hardware. The team is focused on quickly building minimum viable solutions, and we look for friendly, motivated engineers who enjoy working with their peers to drive impact and move the business forward.

This role offers the opportunity to work on integrations with smart networked third party home energy devices, navigate regulatory frameworks that govern electrical systems, and deliver new features like a SPAN Drive charge mode that helps customers save on electricity bills. Writing firmware for even our smallest microcontrollers means working on something that directly impacts the user experience.

Requirements

  • 5 or more years of experience writing software for a hardware device (primarily in a Linux environment) in Rust, Python, and/or C/C++
  • Strong fundamentals in modern software design with awareness of concerns like multiprocess, multithreading, and memory management
  • Experience working with standard electrical communication interfaces like UART, I2C, USB, etc.
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication and collaboration skills, with a track record of building trust and driving decisions to a resolution
  • Track record of taking ownership of projects and willingness to help others with theirs, from design and code review through to mentorship of new employees
  • Experience with embedded Linux system services and application development

Responsibilities

  • Own the full lifecycle of new strategic products, features, and integrations from design through implementation
  • Work across teams to define MVP, manage external partners, define architecture, and lead the implementation of integrations with smart networked third party home energy devices
  • Design new features or capabilities to unlock new markets in response to updated regulatory frameworks
  • Lead the implementation of new customer value features, such as a SPAN Drive charge mode to help customers save on electricity bills
  • Write firmware for systems ranging from bootloaders on systems without an OS up through applications in C and C++ inside an RTOS
  • Develop system services and applications written in Rust and Python in embedded Linux
  • Work directly with cross-functional strategic teams including product, mobile software, cloud software, and hardware

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and equity package
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Flexible PTO and paid holidays
  • Home office stipend for remote or hybrid work setup
